The idea that your appetite is controlled by what nutrients are in the foods is called specific appetite. It’s one of the least understood and understudied fields of nutrition.

If weight gain is caused by specific appetite, the implications of this are enormous. If the reason why diets fail is because they don't address the primary problem that's driving our hunger into overdrive - lack of nutrients. Not only that, but it could explain the causes of a whole host of diseases associated with obesity, ranging from heart disease to cancers. It’s not about low carb, high carb, low fat, high fat, low protein or high protein. It’s about finding all the nutrients that your body needs.

This then has a much bigger implication. Either the food pyramid (aka the ‘balanced diet’ that’s at the heart of the recommended dietary advice worldwide) is clearly not providing those nutrients. Or, the entire world is rebelling one by one, and it’s the inability of the general public to follow simple advice that’s causing the onset of world’s biggest epidemic we’ve ever seen. Clue - it’s the former.

Proving the deficiency theory

There’s nothing worse than an armchair theoretician, which is why I’m putting myself behind what I've called the deficiency theory - literally not just figuratively – with a personal experiment that puts this theory to the test. And yes, I’ve lost a lot of weight but as you can see from the timer on the right, coming soon is an irrefutable scientific verdict when I get checked out for gallstones. As you’ll see, gallstones and weight gain are part and parcel of the same problem. Gallstones affect 20% and 30% of all men and women in the UK (1). 1 in 10 people of the general population (2) will require surgery in their lifetime, and what's more - gallstones and obesity are seen hand in hand.

This site ties a lot together – I starting researching how to get rid of gallstones, but just like the obesity epidemic it’s grown into something much, much bigger.
